Kenema is the third largest city in Sierra Leone, after Freetown and Bo, and the largest city in the country's Eastern Province. It is the district headquarters of Kenema and a major economic center of the Eastern Province.
Kenema is a city with a diverse ethnic population. The city is home to all of the country's ethnic groups, the largest of which is the Mende, but Krio is by far the most widely spoken language in Kenema.
The logging and carpentry industries, which were linked to the city by the now-defunct railway, initially aided in the development of Kenema city. Since then, the area's economy has benefited from the diamond mines, which were discovered in 1931.
