Chief Minister David Sengeh Joins Global Leaders to Mobilise $3.5 Billion for Education at UNGA81

New York, United States | September 23, 2026 Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, has joined global leaders, private-sector representatives, civil society organisations and development partners in mobilising $3.5 billion in financing for education on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
The high-level event, held at the ECOSOC Chamber of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, formed part of the global Multiply Possibility campaign led by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). The initiative seeks to strengthen education systems and expand learning opportunities for children and young people around the world.

The event was convened by Italy, Nigeria and the Global Partnership for Education, bringing together governments and development partners to address the persistent global education financing gap and encourage greater investment in resilient and inclusive education systems.
The $3.5 billion mobilisation comprises $2.1 billion in confirmed and anticipated sovereign donor pledges to GPE, alongside $1.4 billion in co-financing commitments from GPE partner countries.

The commitments are expected to support efforts to improve access to quality education, strengthen education systems and create greater opportunities for children and young people, particularly in countries facing significant financing challenges.

Dr. Sengeh's participation comes as Sierra Leone continues to position education as a central pillar of its national development agenda and its efforts to expand opportunities for children and young people.
The high-level gathering also underscored the importance of stronger international partnerships and sustained financing to ensure that education remains accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of future generations.
