Stop Them Before They Go To War
By Sankara Kamara
The use of "economic hardship" to justify riotous violence is politically dumb and, of course, legally unfounded. Legally speaking, there is a difference between a riot and a demonstration. A riot is grounded in violence against the state, while a demonstration deals with peaceful expression of dissatisfaction. Attacking and burning police stations, setting vehicles on fire and killing police officers are anti-state agitations, typically known as "insurrectionary acts." These crimes are serious enough to be described as "acts of war."
While economic hardship sadly prevails in Sierra Leone, the most recent riot was an act of war, planned and coordinated by Samura Kamara and his APC confederates. TRIBAL diehards within APC believe Sierra Leone must be either ruled by them, or be burnt down. The truth of the matter is that the people's economic hardship has been hijacked by the same APC which laid the foundation on which our long-running misery stands.
While SLPP is incompetent in some areas, the perpetually criminal APC is certainly NOT a solution to our national nightmare. Government faces two options, which require BOLD leadership. Government can either let Samura Kamara and his associates push us into war against ourselves, or use the rule of law to prosecute and imprison the coordinators of WAR within APC. If APC cannot sincerely apologize for its history of one-party dictatorship, national stagnation and civil war, a real leader can BOLDLY DEFEND Sierra Leone by legally moving against war planners before they push us into another war. May God have mercy on politically unfortunate Sierra Leone.
